About Functional Nutrition

What goes into your body matters.

Almost no one would argue with me if I said “eating gravel is tough on your digestive system.” For most people, food sensitivities are much sneakier, and they can make certain foods act like gravel in your system. That’s a big way functional nutrition can help you—by finding out what serves your health and what gets in the way.

You might feel a little off (or—worse—have gotten so used to feeling off that you don’t notice it anymore), or you might have a pressing issue that’s stealing your energy, keeping you from activities you love, or making you feel outright awful. Functional nutrition helps you find the root issues that keep you from feeling your best and shows you ways to use your diet to your greatest advantage.

I’d call it simple, but given how often dietary advice shifts and how complicated eating has become for so many of us, finding your way to a diet that makes you feel fantastic can be a real challenge. Expert guidance makes a big difference.

Bev’s approach is data-driven and, as an analytical chemist, I have to understand the why. Bev found several food sensitivities and helped me learn to recognize what set off my issues. She found the root cause of my digestive trouble, and now I feel really good. There’s no way I could have put it all together until I had the data in front of me.

  • A. If you’ve been befuddled by the ever-shifting “best” way to eat, you’re actually onto something. Expecting results from a diet that wasn’t built to address your unique body is like playing the lotto. Nutritional therapy (also called functional nutrition) starts with you—your struggles, lifestyle, and food sensitivities—and builds nutritional recommendations that take you toward your goals. A nutritional therapist uncovers the root issues behind the symptoms that are driving you crazy and often helps you find issues you were so used to dealing with that you’d thought they were just who you are. Focusing on your body chemistry enables a nutritional therapist to correct imbalances and help you achieve long-term wellness.

  • A: If you’re like most of my clients, what you’re really asking is “Are you about to take all the fun out of my life?” Only if you consider problems like acid reflux, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and digestion struggles fun. Together, we’ll find the root causes of the issues that are keeping you from feeling your best, and I’ll give you suggestions for correcting them. These may be as simple as avoiding tomatoes or adding a supplement. Or they may involve a few months of gentle shifts that help you wean yourself off medications that no longer serve you. My approach will be tailored to how you feel now and where you want to grow your well-being. Find out more about the process here.

  • A: Oh, this is the fun part. I’m in this to see clients feel better. And part of what I do is help them notice what’s going on in their bodies. That’s how they learn to avoid the practices that make them feel lousy and appreciate those that make them feel great. Because you’ll start with a detailed health questionnaire, you’ll have an easy way to go back and check your progress. I will also lead you through evaluations that bring small victories to light, and if you want the numbers behind the improvements, additional lab testing is always available. Ultimately, your progress will become obvious not just to you but to your friends and family.
